The "Mule" (Left) might get the influence from Väinämöinen (Right), the powerful character of Kalevala. Both of those figures use the musical instrument as a tool for controlling people.
The "Mule", the fictional character from Asimov's universe
In the second book of the "Foundation" series, "Foundation and Empire" is the character called "Mule". The musicians have powerful telepathic abilities. Or maybe we should rethink that character a little bit more carefully. The "telepathic abilities" of that character are connected to the electronic organ. So that system can simply use the subliminal commands for taking the persons under the control.
The system can use the combination of flashing lights that are adjusted for causing epilepsy and infrasound what can make the concentration impossible. Or the system can send also electromagnetic impulses, which are causing the electromagnetic resonance in the nervous system. The easiest way is to send the radio signal by using the frequency, which turns the magnesite in the brains as the antenna, and then it would transmit data straight to neurons.
But the radio wave can be conducted to the nervous system by using the blood as the transporter, and that means the parapsychic abilities of the "Mule" are connected to the technical equipment. The radio impulse can make by using the frequency, which is turning the iron in the body to the antenna, and then the system will simply transmit the orders to that person.
The "Mule" is a similar character with Väinämöinen from the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. Both characters have the musical instrument, what gives the unlimited power for the user. The instrument that the "Mule" uses is the electronic organ, and Väinämöinen uses the kantele. This thing is remarkable if we are thinking about the similarity with Väinämöinen and the "Mule".
Were the things like Kalevala and Wilhelm Reich influenced Asimov, when he wrote his book?
There is a couple of interesting details of the book series "Foundation", which is maybe influenced by the national epic of Finland. The holographic chamber of the Hari Seldon maybe got influence from the house-owner-spirits, or maybe Wilhelm Reich and his orgone have given the inspiration for Isaac Asimov. The idea was probably that the wise man would connect the brains to the room, which is made of iron. And that thing allows transmitting the EEG to the person, who is in that metal box. This thing is one of the most interesting visions of science fiction and research, but the practical solutions are very hard to make.
So here I must say that the idea what Wilhelm Reich got was interesting. The idea of Rech was that by using the metal box, where the person dies that thing allows him to capture the soul. The theory of that thing bases the idea that the soul is an electromagnetic phenomenon in the nervous system.
But there was also one other thing that is the same way interesting, and that thing is that by using the box, where is the stable wave movement would strengthen that thing would make the thoughts what people would think visible to other people. That kind of thing is theoretically possible, like the iron boxes, where is making the oscillation, which makes it possible to "open door to the fifth dimension". In that case, the system must make oscillation, which has the frequency, that oscillates the material in the "fifth dimension". And that oscillation can bring the information from the unseen world.
